NBA Star/Goat of the Week – Week 15

NBA Star of the Week – Amare Stoudamire

Amare Stoudamire

Stoudamire was beast for the Suns this past week

Amare Stoudamire – With the departure of Shawn Marion, the Suns are going to need Stoudamire to step up huge and he did just that this week. Amare even delivered some uncharacteristic solid play on the defensive end. In four games, STAT averaged 28.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.3 blocks while shooting 53% from the field and 93% from the line as Phoenix won three out of four.

NBA Goat of the Week – Steve Kerr

Steve Kerr

Kerr is betting Shaq can put the Suns over the top

Steve Kerr – What in God’s name is Steve Kerr thinking? In Shawn Marion, the Suns gave up their most versatile player, best defender and a guy who absolutely flourished in their up-tempo style. If this was two years ago, then trading for Shaq makes sense. But 2008 Shaq is not even close to the player he used to be. This year, Shaq is averaging 14 points and 7 rebounds for the worst team in the NBA! He doesn’t play any defense, is the absolute worst player for the Suns system and has 2 more years left on his contract at $20 mil/year. Plus, all you have to do is look at what happened to some recent centers when they started to decline (Robinson, Hakeem, Ewing, etc). When big guys start declining, they decline fast… and they decline hard. This is just an absurd trade on every level. I remember when the Celtics traded for Vin Baker, I declared that the worst trade ever. I think this trade now can take that distinction. At least with Gin Baker, the Celtics were just killing an average team. The Suns had a team ready to compete this year and beyond and now they are toast. They really should have just traded Amare Stoudamire (*star of the week) for Kevin Garnett in the offseason or maybe traded Marion for Andrei Kirilenko. Not only did Kerr kill the Suns chances, but he deprived NBA fans from seeing more of the most entertaining team in a long time.

  1. trading marion for kirilenko doesn’t work for me. marion and kirilenko play pretty much the same way so there’s really no use to trade them. plus i prefer marion over kirilenko.

  2. the suns felt they needed to trade marion because he was tearing the team apart with his bad attitude. at least kirilenko could run and play defense for the suns and costs a hell of a lot less than shaq. he’s not as good as marion, but at least the suns would get something for marion rather than letting him walk at the end of the season.

  3. got that right str8hoops. skill wise, marion owns kirilenko. attitude wise, i can’t really tell.. marion and kirilenko both demanded to be traded out of their respective teams. i don’t really know how they are in terms if work ethic and attitude, but speaking based on skills and talent, kirilenko is no match with marion.
